periodic high cpu usage

glenh

post sp4 installation on my dell x200, i have a cpu usage
oscillation about every 2 seconds that interrupts sound,
disk usage, keyboard, mouse motion - computus interruptus -
and it is maddening. have tried unloading and reloading
most everything and know the following - it is not present
in safe mode or after hibernation. also, in TM process
window, i cannot seem to catch any process that is spiking
in usage. i have a screen shot of TM graphics showing 3
70% usage events every two graphical division.

any ideas?

I don't have any ideas but I have the same symptom. In my case the symptom
is caused by connecting a CD burner to the computer. I have tried both an
internal IDE drive and an external USB drive with the same results. I can
not see any service that is spiking at the same time as the CPU. I did
notice that rscmpt.exe was acumulating a lot of time. I down loaded the
latest driver from NVidia and that stopped the acumulation on rscmpt but
didn't stop the spikes in CPU usage. If you make any progress, please post
it here.

Hi Glenh,

You could try to "catch [the] process that is spiking in usage" by using Performance
Monitor (perfmon.msc). Specifically, after you notice the "cpu usage oscillation
about every 2 seconds" do this:

- Click Start, click Run, type the following command and click OK
perfmon.msc
- In the left-side pane make certain that "System Monitor" is selected
- In the right-side pane, click the + button on the toolbar to open the Add Counters
dialog box
- From the "Performance object" drop-down box select "Process"
- From the "Select counters from the list" make certain that "% Processor Time" is
selected
- Choose the radio button "All instances"
- Click the Add button and then click the Close button
- You should now have a graph and legend of all the processes found when you run Task
Manager, select the Processes tab, and view the Image Name column
- After the spike occurs look in the perfmon Graph for the line (counter) that
represents "70% usage"
- Double-click a position on that line and then look down in the Legend. The counter
will be selected in the legend and you will be able to find the (taskmgr) "Image
Name" of the process by looking under the perfmon Column named "Instance"

I have a symptom similar to Glen's. I tried what you told Glen to try. When
the CPU usage spikes, none of the processes are showing an increase. Would
this indicate that the CPU is processing an interrupt?

I am having this problem when I try to install a CD burner in my computer. I
have tried both an internal IDE drive and an external USB drive and had the
same problem. It seems that something is generating interrupts when ever a
CD burner is in the system.

Any ideas?

Thanks

David

i found an ansewr on the dell forums - perform a search
with the keyword stutter.

the offender is the software cable detect in the 3com
embedded nic - i seem to recall updating that from MS
recently as a driver update. if you turn off the software
cable detect in the configure network adapter advanced
options, the interruptions stop. this is even with the
the nic disabled, as i had it. now the icon shows a red x
with the computer constant green showing access is being
attempted. i will try enabling the nic and restoring the
software cable detect setting to see if the system becomes
better behaved. at least it is all smooth.

Hi David,

Sorry. Not sure what is going on. I see that you have a message posted to the
microsoft.public.win2000.hardware group. Perhaps the hardware experts will be able
to help you.
