Hello
My Win2K does not start properly, the repair process using the Setup disk
did not work, so I read that you can just re-install over the top of the
existing install (as opposed to a completely fresh install).

My question is, does this leave all data intact in My Documents etc....I
have 3 years worth of (unbackedup) photos and wouldnt want them to disappear
obviously!

thanks

Yes, your data is preserved. Insert the Win2KPro cd into the
cd-rom>re-start the pc and choose boot to the CD>choose install>you will be
prompted to Install the OS, choose yes (enter)>if you see the partition where
the OS was installed previously, make sure it is highlighted if multiple
partitions are present>choosing the previous partition to install the OS will
re-install the OS on the existing partition and leave everything in tact. IF
you don't see the partition where the OS was installed, you are out of luck!
Next time make sure to back up regularly (at least once a month) and
partition the HD in at least two partitions to have a data drive, and OS /
devices / programs drive. You can re-direct the "My Documents" folder to
reside and save your work to another partiton, drive or even machine on a
network to provide redundancy. Good Luck, DanM
