Performance with SMART enabled

I notice that the SMART setting for the hard drives in
the bios is disabled. It says if it is enabled it will be
at the cost of performance. Is it worth enabling SMART?.
Both my hard drives are fairly new. Thank you

Not in my opinion or experience. I have seen it enabled and disks fail
without warning and also seen it issue impending disk failures that
never happened.

I would advise having it enabled. And heed its warnings; it SMART
says a drive is about to fail, it will fail. Haven't seen it be wrong
yet.

The loss of performance is notional, angina practice does not show. It
is well worth it for the security of knowing before hand that a drive is
on the point of failing (which can happen to quite new drives)

I puzzled over that "practice" for a while too. Almost certainly
Alex mistyped "pectoris," his spell checker suggested "practice,"
and he too quickly took the suggestion.


We all do that sort of thing from time to time.
