About 2 days ago a thin line appeared across the monitor
about 4 inches from the bottom of the screen. It is black
and goes completely across the screen whenever the
monitor is on. I'm using Windows XP Professional. any
ideas?

This is due to a problem with your monitor. CRT monitors are not generally
worth repairing. If is still within warranty, however, you should find out
if you are entitled to a free repair/replacement.

It is not Windows that is at fault, your monitor is defective.
You did not say if it was a CRT monitor or Flat Panel Monitor.
I would guess that it is a flat panel and you have lost one row of
transistors on the screen.
In either case, you have to replace the monitor or live with it. I hope
the monitor is under warrantee.

Thanks for the info. this is a fairly new flat screen
Dell Monitor. I also noticed my mouse arrow goes under
the line. So that when I am looking at the arrow as it
goes under the line I can see the whole arrow and also
the line.

I think Richard has it right. Chances are, you will be given a new monitor.
Check your warranty. Good luck.

This is not a windows problem, but a monitor problem. How old is
the monitor? If it's still under warranty, contact your vendor.

If this monitor has a trinitron tube in it this may be normal. Many of the
monitor tubes produced by Sony had a very light pencil line going from one
side to the other about 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the monitor. Some
of the larger monitors had one at the top and one at the bottom.

If you still have the paperwork for the monitor, look in the manual and see
if they state anything about this. Most of the computer manufacturers
started including this information in their troubleshooting section as so
many people complained about the "stripe". If nothing shows in the
documentation, contact Dell as the monitor should be under warranty.

If when you say flat screen you mean a flat CRT, then it is probably based
on Trinitron technology, and those monitors have 2 very fine wires that hold
the mask in place at the same location from the top and bottom. Sometimes it
is more noticeable than others. I bet if you look hard enough, you will find
a very fine line at the top about the same distance from the edge.
