I've used it before in Windows 98 some years ago, but I can't recall
its name now. It's something to do with "peep" or "peek" and it can be
added as an extension to the file manager.

I've tried filesnoop but it's not what I'm looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll bite. How do you "peek into...files without opening them"?

Simple, Blinky. Just shake them lightly and determine the contents from the
sound they make. };O)

Try FREE HEX EDITOR. It adds a right-click option in Windows Explorer. I'm
using it in XP.
