win xp is not a server os!
configured:
ip. 192.168.0.1
empty default gataway or 192.168.0.1

dont set the gw in this nic. you need to set the gateway on client
client only.
dns: 1st: 192.168.0.1 s

same for the dns. dont set it to 192.168.0.1
dns2: aol's

this is problably a firewall problem. Disable your firewalls.

What error message do you get.

no!

Instead of describing, post the results of *ipconfig /all* of both
computers here.
Also post the output of these commands
net view \\compname
net view \\ipaddress

why have you got 2 nics? are you using a router or modem. If you are
using a modem you only need 1 nic

Shouldn't that be the other way around? Using a Router - connect all
PCs and modem to router.. no router (ICS) - connect other PCs to one
NIC and modem to the other NIC..

Unfortunately, most people mistakenly call Broadband devices, modems. They
are not. A DSL device could be plugged into a NIC, a switch, a hub, or a
router, depending on your level of expertise and complexity of your lan. A
modem, generally can only be plugged into a serial port, be it traditional
or USB. Even the internal modems have a serial port associated with them.

yes, i know where the word "modem" comes from. However, the word has
evolved from "analogue/digital converter" to "little box that sits on my
desk and connects me to the computer" :) .. since there's no word for
a broadband "modem", people call them "broadband modems"

technically, the word "broadband" shouldn't be used for DSL either ..
but that's another matter :)

Sorry there is no second NIC as I've mistakenly called the ADSL modem
a NIC.
win xp is not a server os!
Neither is Windows 2000 Pro but am happily using it, without any major
downs, as a 24/7 server for over 2 years. Its just WinXp that is so
awkward to configure right.

Ok. so will empty the GW & DNS fields.

will disable the winXP firewall's.

will do that,

thanks
