PDF not opening from a hyperlink in word doc

I have set up hyperlink to documents and resources in word. The resouces in
Word/Powerpoint format open and display when clicking the hyperlink. All the
PDF files will no display, Adobe flicks momentarily on screen then
disappears. I cannot open any PDF's from hyperlink in Word documents. Any
Suggestions? I have office 2003.
 
Word isn't the issue. It merely calls the other program to open the
specified file - which it is apparently doing. The program being called
can't handle the file.

My guess would be that the version of 'Adobe' ('Adobe' *what*?...Acrobat?,
Reader?) cannot open the PDFs because they were created to require a newer
version. Update your Reader/Acrobat software & see if that resolves the
problem.
