PDF files in word pad

Do you have acrobat reader installed?

If so then right click on any PDF file and choose Open With:
Then Click Choose Program
Identify Acrobat Reader and make sure you click in the box that reads Always
open with....

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf
Backup the key to a REG file

In the right-pane, double-click (default) and set it's value as "AcroExch.Document"
