PC's don't see each other

Mark Flynn

I have a simple peer-to-peer network.
Computer "A" is running WIN2k pro and "B" is running Win 98SE. The
workgroup name is "ANY". the two pc's are connected through a switch which
also includes a router. The router is the DHCP server and A and B are set
to DHCP.
When I look in My Network Places on "A" - I get the error message: "Any is
not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.".
Computer "B" does not see "A" or vis-a-vis.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Mark Flynn

Mark, are you using network neighborhood to view them ? Try using UNC
command, go to start->run, type \\computer A (name of the computer A)
from computer B. See if it works. Btw you must install and enable
network sharing first on each pc.

Hi Daniel:
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Network sharing is installed on both pc's. Using your suggestion (below)
\\computer "A" can't see "B" or vis-a-vis. "Network path not found"
Here's a clue: I can ping "B" from "A", but not "A" from "B". I can ping
the router from both A & B.
Computer "A" is running WIN2k pro and "B" is running Win 98SE.
Any other ideas?
Thanks, Mark Flynn

I don't know of any firewall. However, some time back I did install an AT&T
VPN connection on computer A. This connection could be the culprit. I'll
investigate and report back to you.
Thanks for your help, Mark Flynn

Hi Daniel:
Good clue - firewall. I found the problem.
Apparently, when I installed the AT&T VPN connection, the AT&T software
installed a "Net Firewall". I was looking for the problem in the "Local
Area Connection Properties" - TCP/IP, and didn't notice the Firewall.
un-checking the Net Firewall allowed my tiny network to function.
Thanks again, Mark Flynn
