PC won't reboot, says it's missing operating system

I have an XP PC that will not reboot, it tries and comes up with an
error "missing operating system". I have to do a complete shutdown and
restart. I can't figure out why this is happening. Is there any way to
fix it?

That might indicate that the system is losing track of the hard disk, and
there are a couple of reasons for that; first, that the CMOS battery is low
and needs replacing; another is that the hard disk is failing and needs
replacing.

try running a chkdsk

bootup with your win cd
go through recovery console
and type chkdsk at the prompt.

see if this helps..

I have already run a check disk many times in the past. Maybe it's
failed beyond what that can fix?
