PC Switching Itself On

Hello,

I have a PC which is switching itself on at night when the PC isnt
being used. I have made sure I power down correctly and also make sure
all the lights on the PC are off but it is still switching itself on
at night. Has anyone herd about this at all? Please let me know,
Thanks. T.

Hi there,

There will be something wrong with your power supply. I had the same problem
but it got more serious. It overheated in the end and went on fire losing
all my data and also blowing up my monitor.

Some PC's will boot-up (from an "off" state)if they experience a power
outage (even a short one). Disconnect the mains supply (with the PC
"off"), and then reconnect to test if this is what is happenning to
your PC...

Go into your BIOS and disable Wake On Lan or Wake On Modem.

In that case you can go to the BIOS and disable the option after
power outage.
I disable it otherwise during a time when power is fluctuating on/off
the computer cycles also.

Disable that option unless operation is essential.

Huh? I'd like to say --never post here again-- if you are going to
dispense garbage like this, but it is a free place so post all you
want I guess. I just hope nobody takes you serious.

This has NOTHING to do with the power supply. It is almost certainly
occuring because the system BIOS is set to Wake on LAN (signal from a
cable or DSL modem), Wake on Ring (when the phone rings), or both.
Theses need to be turned off to correct the behavior.

Now, did your computer really catch on fire? How did a power supply,
not hooked up to your monitor, blow it up? THAT would be an
interesting story.

Don't be like that. I was trying to help.

It was perfectly true, my machine went on fire. Flames came out the back.
The problem was I have a computer cupboard to keep my computer in. The air
doesn't flow to well around the computer. I shut the computer down closed
the doors for the night, next morning I found my machine on. Turned it off
at the plug to make sure it stays off. That night I turned the machine on
and there were flames coming out the back. I took it to the computer shop
who told me the powerpack had overheated. I got a new dell machine pluged in
my old dell monitor it didn't work. Tried a different monitor and yes it
worked. So I asked the computer shop whould it be possible for the monitor
to be blown also. He said yes. So had to throw it away.

P.S. What I was trying to say was be careful if your machine keeps
switiching itself back on. You don't want it to overheat.

That is one of many reasons why those cabinets are not a good idea.
It is not unusual fore furniture makers to be ignorant of the
requirements of electronics.
A cabinet housing a computer should be wide open front and back with
at least an inch or two on sides and top.
Of course open back is no good if cabinet is against the wall.

Also if the computer powers itself on, it is not a power supply
problem since the power supply has nothing to do that.

Look in the BIOS, look for Power on Modem or Power on LAN etc and turn
them off.
