Hi

sbs 2003 + isa 2000. A user brings back a win xp pro laptop, connects it to
a network ports and tries to login but fails. This laptop was working fine
when the user left office yesterday. The 'Local Area Connection' in the
'Network Connections' is showing a sign of exclamation. We have tried
connecting the laptop to different ports in the office but no luck. The TCP
settings seem to be fine; Preferred DNS is the server IP 192.168.16.2 and IP
is set to automatically pick up.

What is the problem and how can I fix it?

Thanks

Regards

What happens if you power the laptop off, connect it to the wired LAN, and
let it boot while connected? I've seen laptops where the power settings
disable the wired NIC if no connection is detected.

Failing that, you'll have to troubleshoot the yellow bang on the NIC in
Network Connections. Check the driver, make sure it's enabled in device
manager, make sure it's set to use DHCP, etc.

Tried, turning off the laptop for five minutes and rebooting while connected
to LAN..no luck.

Thanks

Regards

right click on My network places / properties / then View/Details
right click on the local area connection, properties, click configure by
the connect using and look around in there

I'm assuming that when you connected to different office ports, you used
different (known good) ethernet cables.
As Dave suggested, check the device manager to ensure that the NIC is
working OK, and disable Power management.
( probably worthwhile uninstalling and re-installing the NIC - maybe also
for the TCP/IP )
Make sure the Laptop time is current ( within 5 min of the server time )
