I have a Dell Optiplex GX260 (P4 2.4Ghz) with 1Gb ram. A
HP Deskjet 930C connected via the parallel port. Whenever
I print something the PC slows down to 386 speeds..how

Does this behaviour exhibit itself for all applications, e.g. Word,
Excel, Outlook ... or just a particular application?

Perhaps an updated printer driver would fix the problem? You can check
at HP's web site if a newer version is available.

Has this been the situation all along, or is this something new? If
new, what recently changed on your computer?

If you print to a different printer connected to the same port, do you
have the same problem?

Is there a second parallel port on this machine? If so, try the other
port to see if this clears the issue.

Perhaps the perinter cable has become damanged. If you can swap the
cable from another machine, try it with a different cable.

Make sure the "Print Spooler" service is set to Automatic. If you don't
know how to do that, don't worry about it; it should be fine. Go into
the printer properties, and try setting it to "Spool print documents so
program finishes printing faster" (and "Start printing immediately"),
rather than "Print directly to the printer".
