I have a HP Deskjet 1220C connected to a Dell Latitude D810 which is
connected to a network. When someone prints to this computer it slows down
the laptop thats connected to it. We are running Win XP. What could be
causing this? I think the laptop has 512mb ram..?

The amount of ram is not very much.  The CPU may also be used.  The task manager may tell you if cycles are being used.

Not surprising. 512 is barely enough to run XP let alone applications.
Either increase memory or a better solution would be to move the printer to
a network attachment.

How is the computer connected to the computer? If by a parallel port make
sure the port is set to ECP or ECP/EPP in BIOS and that you are using an
IEEE cable.
