PC shuts down unexpectantly

Why would a PC (running W2k Pro) occasionally shut down unexpectedly?

There's NO blue screen. It just shuts down. It has occurred 3 or 4 times in
the past couple of weeks. It seems to only occur when the PC is being used.
Possibly (not certain) when the user uses the mouse to click on something.

Run hardware diagnostic tests on it. If nothing shows in the event
viewer it suggests hardware problems. Overheating or bad memory might
be at cause. A good torture test might find defective hardware.

Their are many options:

1. Is there ans error on screen saying "lsass.exe shutdown in 00:30
seconds"
Then it may be sasser virus.
2. Any remote shell going on which controlls your system
3. Remote procedure call service unexpectevily stops and cause system
reboot.
4. Virus/Spyware.
5. Any master service stops.

What yo ucan do is go to event viewer and check what is the error
coming and dopost it

Could be heat related, and your comp is trying (not, note succedding if
problem is ignored) to protect itself from damage by shutting down.
Open up the case, blow out all the dust, make sure your fans are
spinning (this is routine maintinence and should be done occasionally
anyway). OR it could be a power supply issue. OR another hardware
malfunction (video card?) OR one of several viruses.

For the record...After replacing the power supply AND blowing the dust out
of the case, the problem seems to be fixed.

I think the shut downs were caused by overheating caused by dust. The fins
on the heat sync had more dust caked on it than I've ever seen before on any
computer.

Thanks for the help.
