Hello,

I have a W2K PC which I have loaded the incorrect drivers for a modem and now even when I have taken the modem out the PC is still taking about 5 mins to boot up and can not get around this. If I boot up in safe mode it is alot fast. How can I repair or undo these installs of drivers as they do not show in the add / remove programs list.

Thanks.

Go into Device Manager, look under Modems, right-click/Uninstall
on the errant driver(s).

The modem is showing to be uninstalled and doesnt show in device manager.
Any more ideas? Thanks.

You could boot up in boot log mode, then examine yr boot log for errant
drivers.
You will probably find a boot logging tool on a shareware site, these can
sometimes help in examining the startup sys.
However did you install/update any other drivers? specifically vid.drivers

No other drivers I had everyhting working and booting up at a good speed before I tackled the modem, It has installed drivers which were not ment for W2K but install anyways and then didnt work and now I think these are the cause of the problem. I have removed the old modem from the PC so now it shouldnt be trying to load the drivers but still it is having trouble. Safe mode is still a little slow but its alot better than normal mode. Any more ideas will be great I dot really want to reinstall W2K!!!

Thanks, Timothy.

More than likely a fix is going to entail some manual registry editing.
There's no way I or anyone else can walk you through the process
via these newsgroups. If you aren't familiar with the registry then
find someone locally who is, and make sure you have a system
backup before proceeding.

I know how to use regedit and regedit32, but I just dont know where to look?

Would it be something running when the PC starts or under drivers? If anyone knows where abouts to look in the reg Please let me know the keys, Thanks.

First check your Autorun keys. Hopefully it's something simple:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Check the LEGACY_XXXX drivers in HKLM\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root (you'll need regedt32 to set
permissions, before you can remove one or more of these).

Also check for other drivers in HKLM\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Enum.

And services in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.

If you aren't sure a given entry is related to your modem, do NOT
delete it. One false move may render your installation unbootable.

You could also perhaps search for spyware on your PC. Download and install
Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ . It is a spyware analysis and removal
tool. The free version has to be run manually but can be automated at every
logon. Safe and efficient.

Hope this helps.
