This XP laptop I have been working on had many viruses and spyware which I
removed with AVG antivirus and SpySweeper spyware program. After the last
running of SpySweeper it insisted on a reboot, and now at logon I get a
window stating "This copy of Windows must be activated with Micosoft before
you can log on". I tryed to follow the promps, but even when I put in the
correct product key it says its wrong and refuses let me in. I went to a
link: "http://pa.one.microsoft.com/portal.aspx(with a whole bunch of numbers,
letters and symbols after it) which I have no way of knowing if it is really
a Microsoft website or not. There is also a phone number 888-571-2929, which
they suggest I call to talk to a Microsoft representative. I don't now if
this website address, and or the phone number are okay, or they are a scam.
Can anyone give any suggestions?

Thanks

Ted

For starters, if it's not legitimate, he would be giving a
valid CD key to someone who will use it to activate a pirated
version of Windows. If in the future he needed to activate
Windows on his own PC, he'd be told that it was already
activated on another computer.

This portion of the link you posted appears to be legit.
http://pa.one.microsoft.com/portal.aspx

That said, just to be on the safe side you might want to take a
look here for assistance with product activation:

Activation and registration of a Microsoft product
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851

The phone number listed there for Windows activation is (888)
571-2048.

Good luck
