PC - laptop via crossover cable...

Hey all.
I got a new laptop today and, like most people, I want to transfer my
personal files from my PC onto my laptop. However, I'm having a bit of
trouble getting it to work.

I have the cable plugged into the right port on both systems and
earlier I had it kind of working, but not properly. I could connect to
the internet on the laptop, via the PC.. However, when I went into my
shared documents nothing was showing up (even though I've already got a
few folders in there waiting to be shared on the PC).
Does anyone know what's up, or what I'm doing wrong?
Also, is there any fairly simple guides on the net that explain it from
start to finish as well as a fair bit on troubleshooting? I tried a few
but they all resulted in the same thing (limited or no connectivity, or
only internet access being available).
If anything, it's a problem with the PC as my friend tried to connect
his laptop to it a while ago and it didn't work.
The PC is running Windows XP Pro SP2 and the laptop is on Windows XP
Home SP2. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it...

I would, but I think I've spent enough money over the past few days.
I'm not looking for workarounds I just wanna try and get what I've got
working.

Ok all, change of situation...
I've not got file sharing working, but not internet sharing...

It might just be that I need to enter a proxy etc... But for now I've
got the main issue solved. Turns out I downloaded the updated Network
card drivers earlier on, but forgot to install them =P typical. Anyway,
the transfer thing is working great now ;) Cheers!

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard should help.
I have a similar problem with my new WinXP Pro SP2 system talking to my
old Win2K laptop.
My new XP system can see my WinNT 4.0 desktop, a WinME desktop, but not
the Win2K laptop.
All the other machines can see the WinXP system.

Try this: On the Win XP home system
a) open a command prompt and type
b) net use H: \\XpProName\C$ where "XpProName" is the name of the
WinXpPro machine.
if you connect successfully you can copy all the files FROM your old
machine to the new machine.
I used a command like this on the old machine to copy all my Eudora email
files to the new machine.
xcopy c:\iu\jkp\*.* h:\IU\JKP\ /s /e /h /c
and to copy my Olympus Camera install files from the Win2K machine to the
new XpPro machine
subst x: c:\ax\bbs ; Download archive on all my machines
is X:
xcopy x:\bbs\olympus\*.* s:\ax\bbs\OLYMPUS\ /s /e /h /c /d
You can also open windows on the remote H: and local C: drives and copy
entire folders.
I prefer the command line method because I keep the command in a reference
file.
