pc keeps shutting down

Hi

I'm running windows xp home and lately my computer has been switching itself
off. It is happening just about all the time. I am running Spybot and
Ad-aware and Norton Anti Virus 2004, although Norton refuses to enable itself
at log on. I am sorting this out with Symantec (I hope).

I have been plagued for weeks now the 'Best Offers' popups, and a file
called nail.exe is on my pc which I gather is malware. Neither Spybot nor
Ad-aware can remove it. I found a web link with a step by step guide to
remove it. Now I keep getting a popup telling me that nail.exe isn't
installed, do I want to install it now. I just don't know what to do.

Is nail.exe definitely malware, is it causing the best Offers pop ups and
could any of my issues be the cause of the computer switching itself off?

Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any 'Errors'. If any found, could you
please post the Source and Event ID? With those your problem could be
narrowed down.

Hello Will

In the event viewer should I be looking at Application, System or Security?
I can see the source tab but not the Event ID. Unless the numbers listed
under the Event tab is what you mean?

Hi

In System and/or Application. Yes the number in the Event column.

Hi Will

I was logging on to the pc and it switched itself off just after I put in my
password. Now it's not even responding when I press the On button. (Obviously
it's not the pc I'm posting from). It seems very bleak to me. What do you
think?

Hi

If you've checked that all the cables are securely in place, and you still
can't get the PC to boot, then I would suggest that it is looked at local by
a computer shop/store.

If you leave it an hour, will it switch on then? (My machine started
playing up, turns out the mobo AGP slot was dying!).

Anyway, if you can get the machine on, boot in safe mode (finger on F4, or
F8 through the boot POST).

Hi

You may just need to leave it for a while, then try again later. However,
the PC seems as though it does need looking at.

Jackie, this is probably right off but you never know.
My sister's pc did exactly that. At first it rebooted itself a couple of
times then it wouldn't at all , just a black screen.
I tried sister's monitor on friend's pc and that worked. I then tried
sister's pc on friend's monitor and sure enough it was working. So it turns
out that it was either the wrong cable from Pc to Monitor that finally died,
(friend's monitor has built in cable), or the display card decided not to
like the cable. Don't know till we get hold of another cable. But relief
that it wasn't the pc
good luck
