Pc crashes when opening word doc.

My Pc was doing fine until this morning when I tried to open a word document..it seemed to take ages to open ...so using crtl.alt.delete to close the action I then get a warning saying " there are not enough recourse, insuffient memory in the PC so advising me to close any programmes open and then to try again

So I close this warning and then the PC crashes I not even able to go to START to close down the PC ..I have to switch off the PC from the mains

I have deleted and reinstalled word but nothing

This has happened several times over the years and the only recourse for me on each time was to reformat the HD and reinstall everything again from scratch

Does anyone have any suggestions, I sincerely look forward to any comments anyone might have in respect

The word is Winword 2000 from the Works Suite 2000 and the IE is upgraded to

The problem is more likely in the document than in Word itself. Next time it
happens, use the Task Manager to find out what the PC is doing (check what
process is using the system resources). You might be able to recover the
text of the document using the 'Recover text from any document' option;
apart from that, deleting the document may be the best fix.

Reinstalling Windows seems excessive! The problem is attributable to either
a corrupt document or a corrupt template or add-in. Will Word start normally
from Windows > start > run with the command Winword /a ?

Clean up the mess the crash has left

Temporarily remove any add-ins. Rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot and the
chances are you'll be back in business.

To add to what Jezebel and Graham have said, if you're not opening Word from
within Works, uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word.
