path for video clip

Video clips inserted into a deck from a user's hard drive need to be
accessible corporate-wide at a network location. If I copy the video clips
into the network drive with public read access, the path of the video clip
reads the drive letter rather than the network server name. Not everyone's
drives point to the location where the clips are stored, despite the fact
that they have full access to the network location. How can I get these
clips to point to the server location instead of the drive letter? (Outside
of removing each clip and reinserting it from the new location?)

You've answered your own quesion, sort of...

(Outside of removing each clip and reinserting it from the new location?)

When you insert a media clip in PPT it doesn't know named drives from
diddly, it uses the drive letter. Change the drive letter and the links are
broken.

If you can explain why you want to have it on a networked drive maybe I can
offer some sugestions or alternatives.

The clips need to be accessible in a public location because I share the ppt
with dozens of people accross the company who do not have their drive letters
and network paths identical to mine. There has to be a way to trick Power
Point into looking for the network path rather than the drive letter. Help!!

None that I am aware of. However you might consider setting the video clip
up to stream the media to them from your server. Take a look at our new add
in that provides for just such a need.

Seems like they should work if you add them through Network Places...using a
UNC rather than a path. Such as: \\bigserver\topfolder\smallfolder\

Just like a printer might be available to all, so is a file. If the LAN is
segmented and this isn't possible, maybe a web link through an intranet
would work.

Just thinkin' out loud...

Thanks to all responses...and out loud thoughts : ) The ppts do live out on
our webserver and are accessed via an intranet link. I'll check out the
tools you've all mentioned.

John, you could be right but I wonder if PPT's insert dialog will let you
navigate to it?

Beat me to it, ya did.
But how the heck are ya, mr. O?

Doing great, and about ready to start building some new presentations. Spent
the last year writing/editing four new books, and hanging around a few
specialized NGs with very high S/N ratios. Wow, that's fun...not.

I find myself a bit out of the Ppt loop these days, it seems.

It does for me. I enter a UNC on the filename line, and it dumps me into the
right folder, where I can select a file. I 'assume' Ppt is using a UNC,
since I'm not using a drive letter to get there.

Excellent!

Thanks for testing John.

A file via UNC path? Sure. As John says, you can type it in if you know the
full path already or browse from My Network Places.
