patchy sound

When my Windows XP Home comes up the sound breaks. Sounds like when a cell
phone call breaks up. When I try to listen to say youtube or something of
that nature it breaks up so much I really can't understand what is being
said. I have very little on my computer in fact the only extra software I
have is Microsoft Office. Any ideas?

Background software may be involved. Some antivirus and anti malware
programs may be "inspecting" the data stream.
Your ISP may also be "throttling" data flow.
