patch won't install

Hello. I have XP Home SP1 on my Gateway Laptop and I
have been trying to install the 823980 critical patch
since just before the Blaster hit me and many others. I
download the patch fine, whether from Windows Update or
the Microsoft download site. However when I install, I
briefly see the dialog stating about the files being
verified and extracted but it disappears quickly and I
never see a dialog asking me to restart my computer as I
have when installing previous updates. No error window
appears either but the patch is not listed in my
Add/Remove Programs so I assume the install fails. Does
anyone have any idea how I may be able to rectify this
problem? Any help given will be greatly appreciated.

The Patch was intended to STOP you being "blasted". Now that you HAVE been
blasted, you need to obtain a fix to REMOVE the blaster. Most Anti Virus
Companies offer one. (I use NORTONS and obtained the removal program from
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/)
