Paste function in the Edit drop down menu

When I go to the edit drop menu and select the paste option to paste a file, the paste function cannot be highlighted and selected. It is only shown in a
gray shadow box. What is the problem?
 
When "paste" is grayed out, it means Word does not recognize that you have copied anything to paste. What method are you using to copy?
