Passwords on XP accounts

Recently did an XP-home upgrade install from ME. It was giving me a lot of
problems, so last night I wiped C: and did a clean XP-home install. When it
asked to set up account names, I put in five names but no passwords. When
setup was complete and rebooted, all five accounts are asking for passwords
now. None of the "normal" passwords (password, windows, <return>) will work.
Does anyone know what password it might be looking for? The admin account
in safe mode comes up protected also.

Failing this, I thought I would re-wipe the disk and try again. However,
the "Safe mode w/ command prompt" still attempts to log on as admin before
showing the command prompt. Therefore I can't even reformat and start over.
How do I get to a prompt?

I get an error box that says : "System cannot log you on due to the following
error:
Specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please
try again or consult your sysadmin."
Once that box is cleared, there is another reminder box pointing to the
password field tha says: "Did you forget your password? Check the CAPS LOCK
and try again"

When you go to log in use the dropdown section to select the local computer
name. It will say "(this computer)", then try the username with no password.

I recognize the field you're talking about from using XP Pro at work, but my
home version does not ask for a domain - only username and password.

I did manage to find the format option in the setup so last night I wiped
the disk and reinstalled. When the setup asked for the five usernames I only
put in one and finished the setup. The welcome screen came up with only my
one username and NO password request. So now I'm in and can set up the other
accounts from the control panel.

I don't know why it works for only one name and burped on five, but it's
fixed now and seems to be doing well.
