Password Restricions on NT 4 computers

Chris Miller

If I have a AD domain in mixed mode and I set a domain GPO
to restrict password policies will that affect users
logging onto NT systems? I did not find any password
settings with the NT/2000 system policy editor.

The Password Policy can only be changed in the Default Domain Policy. This
will apply to any W2k or XP client, Server or DC in the domain. You can
use usrmgr to modify the password policy on NT4 Servers and workstations.

Password settings will affect users of the domain for which you have them
configured. Since password validity check is made on a DC for appropriate
domain, it should make no difference where that user logs on, W2k machine or
higher or a NT machine - although it is possible that NT will not display
correctly error messages related to insufficient password complexity when
you change password.
