Let me try this again

I have a lap top with windows 2000 pro operating system. I
recently was attempting to add a wireless network to my
home including this laptop. After adding the network card
and drivers and rebooting the system, I found that my
password (for startup) is no longer accepted. I do not
have the boot or administrator disc. How do I recover my
password without having to install a new operating system
and loosing my saved data???
..

If you have forgotten the Administrator password that you enter after
pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE to log into Windows, then there are free
disks here that will reset the password, from the FAQ:

http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm#password

Resetting the password is faster and easier than recovering the
password. There are ways to recover the password, for example,
capturing the SAM or the contents of the SAM using PWDUMP3 and using
L0phtcrack [around $50 US last time I checked] or a free alternative.
