Update:

Charlie, apparently this problem is fixed with SP-2 for Office XP.

See if installing that service pack resolves the problem.

Sonia / Echo S,
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I have been busy / procrastinating.
It's on my list of things to do. I will get a file to you as soon as I can.

Thanks, Charlie.

Were you able to send a sample file to Sonia?

Echo S, I'm using Windows 2000 Professional (as dictated by my company).

:

Also, Charlie, I see that you mention below you're using PPT 2002. What
version of Windows are you using?

Charlie, we discussed this with Microsoft. If you can send us a file
created as
you described, one that has a password assigned and will not print,
they
are
anxious to test it in their labs. You can either send the file you
have
been
talking about, or you can extract one or two slides and save them with
a
password. Be sure to test that the new small file also does not
print.

You can send it to sonia @ soniacoleman dot com.

Which gives an opening to encourage everyone to keep their versions of Office
current. There is, in fact, also a Service Pack 3 for Office XP. Go to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx and follow the links for "Check
for Updates".

Correction to the update:

Make that SP-3 for Office XP which is supposed to have fixed this problem.

Guess that makes Sonia's suggestion to keep current on all SPs even more
important! :-)

Thanks. I'll try that and see how I go.

I have tried to install SP-3 but have had troubles doing so (it times out
from the server and won't finish loading).
I have spoken to someone in IT at my company and he seems to think that this
fix will not actually address the problem. (?) I have little choice but to
use an alternative (more cumbersome) workaround, however I will send a sample
file to Sonia to see if anything more can be done.

It prints fine here in PowerPoint 2003 SP-1 and PowerPoint 2002 SP-3. Per the
information that we have from Microsoft, I don't think you will be able to print
it until you install Office XP service pack 3. If your organization subscribes
to MSDN they might have the service pack on CD, but if not they can definitely
download it from the MSDN site.

Your IT person doesn't know know what he's talking about. If our contact in
Microsoft says that the problem was explicitly fixed in service pack 3 then I
believe him. Each service pack is made up of changes that address known
problems and they are very well documented in the release notes. That's why
it's important to stay up-to-date, so that you don't suffer from old problems
that have been resolved long ago.

In addition, this issue is actually documented in the MSKB. (I'm embarrassed
that I didn't find it before now!)

Yeah! Always better to start your day with crisp, fresh new problems instead of
those limp, old moldy ones. ;-)
