password protect shared folders on XP?

I want to share folders on my computer throughmy network. I remember in
win9x you could password protect individual folders but I know you can't do
that in XP. I gave my user account a password and then I made the folders
"private" but that only applies to user account folders, and not my slave HD
with shared folders and stuff on it.

Disable simplified file sharing in "Folder Options". This brings up the very
same menus shown by default in Windows 2000.

I'm not familiar with those types of settings. I see where I can set
permissions, for like everyone and admin and stuff like that..but what about
passwords...I don' tcare what type of user a person is on another comptuer,
guest admin or whatever I just want to share by password protection only.

XP doesn't support password protected shares. No version of NT has
ever provided that. If you are running peer-to-peer, you need to
create a user on all machines that will participate in the share, each
one using the same username/non-blank password. Then set up the share
permissions and include that user.

This is easier in a domain, as you don't have to do all the work of
creating all the user accounts on all the machines in question. The
PDC takes care of all the security functions for you.

Okay, well I booted up this morning and tried to access my main computer via
network, and this time it asked me for user name and password. That's great,
however, it only asked that one time, and after that I didnt need to. Then I
went to a near by computer and tried to access it and it didn't ask me for a
password...

If you aren't running you network on a domain, then XP runs in a
peer-to-peer mode. All machines in the network need to have identical
user accounts with identical non-blank passwords; this is how they
authenticate users and permissions among themselves.

My guess would be that your first attempt was made at a computer that
didn't have your account name/pw on it - once you supplied it the
remote computer recognized you for that duration of that session.
Once you logged of an logged back on, it probably will ask you for
username/pw again, etc, ect.

The second computer you tried probably already had your usernanme/pw
account created - so automatically authenticated you and passed you
through.
