Password Protect problem between 2000 and 2003

I have some documents that were generating using PowerPoint 2003. The author
password protected the documents. When I try to open the documents on a
computer that has PowerPoint 2000, I get an error and the dcoument won't
open. Is this a known problem with PowerPoint? Is there a solution (aside
from removing the password protection)?

The error that is given is:
"PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by...(the .ppt filename)."

Earlier versions of PowerPoint cannot read password protected presentations
(they never had it). You need to get the author to remove the password.

The problem is that password protection wasn't introduced until version
2002, so 2000 can't open password-protected files. For more information
see "Password protect a presentation" from the PPT FAQ:

Yes, it's a known condition. PPT 2000 had no password protection so it
doesn't know anything about it. As you suspected, the only real solution is
to remove the protection.

Sammy,
To view the presentation, you can download the PowerPoint 2003 viewer and
install it on the machine with PPT 2000. If you know the password, it will
allow you to view the show.

Or maybe even if you don't (depending on whether an open or a modify
password was specified). <g>
