Cannot open or save password protected files in Powerpoint

Guest

Problem 1:
I couldn't open a password protected file in Powerpoint, the error message
was "password incorrect". However, when the file could be opened on another
computer with the same password.

Problem 2:
I couldn't save Powerpoint with a password. After password is set,
Powerpoint file is to be closed. On close, error message "Save the file
[filename]?". Clicked Yes. File wouldn't close. The powerpoint file will
be closed if user answers "No" to the question. In that case, file is closed
but it is not saved.

I have tried to uninstalled and reinstalled Powerpoint from Add/Remove
programs > Microsoft Office > Change. But no luck. Please advise.

I believe newer versions of PowerPoint have higher encryption for passwords.
Are you trying to open a password protected presentation of a newer format
with an older version?

I wouldn't think that's the case. The other computer which can open the
password protected file has the same version of Powerpoint (Powerpoint 2003)
as mine.

I would check Help, Abut Microsoft PowerPoint: verify that you're running SP1
at least, preferably SP2.

If not, do Help, Check for Updates and get any recommended updates offered.

I am running SP2.

OK, thanks. That lets out the obvious one.

Next, I'd do Help, Detect and Repair.

What version of PowerPoint do you have and is it Windows or Mac?

What message do you see when you try to open a protected file? The exact text,
please.

I have to ask the obvious questions:

- Are you *certain* you've typed the correct password? Try typing it into
Notepad (where you can see what you're typing) then copy/paste into PPT. Don't
copy/paste any extra spaces and so forth.

- Is the "casing" correct? "Password" and "password" and "passworD" are all
different.

If you've checked all of that and it still doesn't work, try creating a new
presentation and password protect it with something ridiculously simple like
"a" (no quote marks). Then save and try to reopen it. Does that work?

Hello,

the password is definitely correct. On another computer is open for the
presentation possible.

A new presentation cannot be stored with password. An error message does not
appear. PP appears the message "Save" again and again when I try to close PP.

Office was already deinstalled and again installed. No success.

thx,
Bernd

Ah ... if this copy of PowerPoint has not been activated, it may not let you open or
save protected files. From the main menu bar, try Help, Activate Product. If it's
already activated, it will just say so and do no more.

Grabbing at smoke ... ;-)

But are there any characters in the password that might change when the keyboard mapping
changes? The VB editor in PPT suddenly started driving me crazy a few days ago ... kept
typing British pound signs instead of quote marks and such. I must have accidentally
pressed the keyboard combination that changed the keyboard from US to British English.

Perhaps something like that's happened at your end?

I'd feel more comfortable if you explained how you know this and why you're certain my
suggestion above (or even a sticky key on the keyboard) isn't possibly the answer.

But in any case, I'm afraid I don't have any further ideas about this one.

Hi Bernd,
I have the same problem, under the same circumstances. What I did
notice: other users _can_ save a PP presentation with a password. I
suspect it has something to do with a setting in a mandatory profile.
Maybe somebody can comment on that? Have you fixed the problem yet?

Thanks,
Arjan

My users are very angry about this.

When my problem is fixed i will write here,
