Password protect a folder

I use only the default XP (username) account that has admin privileges and
do not have it password protected.
Tried to set up a password for one folder only (make folder private) but it
wants me to log in to my account each time I boot up.
Is there a way to set it so that it only asks for a password if I attempt to
open one particular folder?

No, not within Windows. You need a third-party application to do this.

Thanks, seems a bit of an oversight by MS.
Know of any recommended progs?

Winzip is one - otherwise just google....

I have googled, there are loads of the buggers, that's why I wanted a tried
and tested one.
Interesting you mention Winzip, I thought that was just a file compression
prog.
I have WinRar, so may have some type of lockable/password option in that.
Thanks again.

The "zipped folder" feature of Windows XP provides for password
protection. Please see "Compressed (zipped) Folders overview" in Windows
Help.

Windows uses file and folder permissions for this, not passwords.

Thanks to all who replied.
I have managed to password protect the folder using WinRar.
