I have XP Pro and a Mac OS X networked wired over a router. Both computers
can access and see each other. I have simple file sharing on. Now i chose to
share a folder over the network. When i go on the Mac to access the folder,
it asks for user name and password but my Mac user name and a balnk password
allows me access to the folder. on the XP machine i'm the admin and use a
password to logon.

Shouldnt I be required to use a windows username and password to access the
folder? well how do i make that happen?

With Simple File Sharing, you only use the Guest account for authentication.
You could assign a password to the Guest account.

Not sure why the link didn't work, if you'd provide some details what problem
you have this might be a bit easier.

Whether you're depending upon the Guest account, or a non-Guest account, for
authentication, the account that you use has to be properly activated. Using the
Control Panel applet activates any account for local use. To activate any
account for network access, you need to:

* Hit Start.
* Hit Run.
* Enter "cmd" (less the "")in the Run window.
* Enter "net user AccountName /active:yes" (less the "") (Substitute actual
account name for "AccountName"), in the command window.

Always synchronise passwords (for the Guest or non-Guest account) on all
computers - make them identical (or blank) on each.

* Start.
* Run.
* Type "control userpasswords2" into the Run window (less the "").
* Select the account of interest in the User Accounts list.
* Hit the Reset Password button.
* Type either a blank, or non blank password, identically, into both "New
password" and "Confirm new password" fields.
* Hit OK twice.
