I just upgraded to XP Pro. For a couple of days, I could start it up
without any password, the way I did with WinMe. Today, at startup it
brings up a password dialog box. I suspect it is a result of my
installing last night MS Office XP &/or its media disk or its
interactive tutorial.

Whenever the password dialog has come up, I have just pressed OK. But I
would like to eliminate that step as I did in WinMe. I am the only
one using the computer and it is in my home. So, I do not need the
security of the password. Can someone tell me how to get rid of the
password dialog box? Thanks.

Hi Bob,
Try start, control panel, user accounts and see if you can get rid of
it there. If not download tweakui for xp. That will give you the
options for logon.
Hope this helpls,
Rich

What if someone breaks into your home? A password could help if they took
the computer or just tried to see what you have...........I always recommend
using password and no auto-logon programs...... but anyway, to have xp auto
logon with no password:

Start, run, type in: control userpasswords2, hit enter.

Uncheck: users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.

Xp will then ask you to enter the user and password you want to auto-logon
to.

Thanks Rich. I may look for and download tweakui for xp. I have used
it on previous versions of Windows.

Thanks. I will think about your caution about someone breaking into our
home. Thanks for the procedure for the mean time.

Leaving aside the point of whether you want a password, you can go to
Control Panel - User accounts, and 'change way users logon' to select
'Use Welcome screen'/ That will put things back in default mode - a
Screen "Welcome", and an icon on it for each user account , if more than
one. If only one account, it will assume that one, but will ask for a
password if one has been set
