what would cause all passwords to disappear and is there a
fix or repair, without reinstalling the program(Windows
2000 Professional).

I have been having the same problem off and on since I
installed 2K pro over a year ago. Have searched high and
low for an answer without luck. Just left the question
here today but don't expect much help here either.

all password to open windows 2000 pro(users and administrator). also we are getting the alt-control-del message box at login instead of it going to the login box. the way it was set was it went to the login box(user name then password) know alt-control-del message box to login

Passwords for what? Are they now blank or what does this mean

This explains nothing about the problem you're having. If you don't know the
password for the local administrator account, then search these groups for
the subject line 'password' for some methods to get around the problem.

well we know what the passwords are its like the computer does not know what they are, yes caplock off/numlock on is the way the passwords were entered and we are typing them. this includes the administrator password. i'm one of two administrators we use the same password.

So, you are typing in passwords, then what happens?
Nothing? An error message?
