Hi-

I'm trying to partition my C:- the computer is running
Windows XP Home. When I go to the Computer Management
Section, and right click on anything, no options for
partitioninng the disk pop up. The details of the system
are: Volume: C:
Layout: Partition
Typr: Basic
File System: NTFS
Status: Healthy
Capacity: 149.05 GB
Free Space: 139.61 GB
% Free: 93%
Fault Tolerance: No
Overhead: 0%

I have read some wehre that for this i have to use 3rd party software
for paritioning. But am wondering, can i format my present hard disk,
and then partition it. But am not sure i have just got the Windows Xp
Dell Cd, so will i be able to install the OS again .
Does anybody has any idea for this
Thanks

1. You cannot partition already-partitioned HDD space from within XP by
using Disk management.
2. You CAN re-partition the HDD as part of a re-format and re-install
3. You can re-partition from within Windows with the use of a third-party
application.

It also depends as to whether your Dell cd is a win installation cd or a
Dell recovery cd.
If its a recovery cd it may well put your PC back to the configeration it
was supplied with

You don't want to format your C: drive while within windows, and xp will not
allow you to do it anyway, if you want a larger partition you need to get all
the details together before you install. What size total is your Primary
drive , what size do you want the partition to be, I'd say 20G is min for XP,
even if you have a third party software to change the partition, XP may not
boot if you do! so a repair may be necessary.

if you have a restore cd, forget it, you will get the same size, if you have
a full install cd, if will ask if you want to format.

Lots of things to consider, do some reading on the subject before you
actually do the job.

Well, for starters, you can't partition/repartition your hard drive
from within Windows.

If you have the Dell Restore disk (which if you have a new computer
that you bought from Dell, you should have it)

You simply backup all your data, you drop the Dell Restore disk in
your CD Rom Drive, and you reboot. That means, you either hit the
Reset button, or you turn off power and turn it back on, then press
the Start button on the front of the case.

The CD will take care of the rest, it partitions, formats, installs
Windows Home, etc.

But you will no longer have the data.

If you don't have the Dell Restore disk(s), you need to obtain those,
or you need to get a copy of XP home or XP pro.

Good luck!
