Hello Dave,

Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical
Support.

I'm sorry to read that you are having such troubles with
installing a second operating system.

In your email, you stated that the Windows 2000
installation has merged with the Windows XP installation,
and a choice had to made for which operating system to
boot with.

Since the two operating systems have merged, I could only
assume that Windows 2000 got installed to the same
partition as Windows XP already was, and not to a new
partition created just for Windows 2000.

If this is the case, then I cannot say what steps must be
taken to uninstall the Windows 2000, as it could have
merged into the Windows XP to a level that removing
Windows 2000 may not be easy, or even possible.

In our support documents for installing Windows 2000 into
an existing Windows XP system, the instructions say to
create a new partition, and make that partition
the "Active" partition.

That action will cause the system to use that new
partition by default the next time the computer starts,
and allow you to install the operating system only to
that new partition, and not to the one that Windows XP is
already installed to.
If you did not set the new partition as Active, then the
computer would boot to the existing Windows XP partition,
and the installation of Windows 2000 would then be merged
with Windows XP, unless you went through several steps to
change the location of the Windows 2000 installation.

I cannot say for sure exactly what has happened, but I
can only assume that the two operating systems are now in
the same partition because of the symptoms that you
described.

Please review our instructional document on "Partitioning
your hard disk using PartitionMagic 8.0 to install
Windows 2000/XP on an existing Windows 2000/XP system"
and see if any of the steps in that process may have been
missed, and that might be an answer to what happened.
That document can be seen at our website -

20PartitionMagic&ver=8.x&src=sg&pcode=npmagic&svy=&csm=no

If the two operating systems have been merged, then
Microsoft support may need to be contacted for the proper
steps you to take for recovery.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

So whats the big deal, install xp cd,boot to cd,install xp,then select new copy.
XP reformats the hd and installs xp.XP already has the capabilities of
partitioning a hd for another OS,you should read more on installing 2 OS
together, put this one as water under the bridge.Magic does work in xp.

What is the procedure to install win2k (presumably in a logical
drive) after XP is already installed? Is it possible?

Do you have to use XP's config console to repair the startup
environment? If so, I would assume that would fix the posters
problem.

Just ignore Andrew the Eejit - he doesn't know what he's babbling on about.
I'm surprised he can spell his own name!

Andy what have I told you about checking your facts before posting? The
installation of a second OS if you already have an OS installed requires a
third-party partition application.

my anger is with the people who made partition magic

1) The word is 'length'
2) This is Usenet, not e-mail
3) If you're angry with the developers of Partition Magic, why are you
posting to a Microsoft newsgroup?!

Having read this is what is known as an ID-TEN-T error (also known as a BCAK
error) for which there is no fix.
