Partition Magic 6 ok with XP??

Guest

I am upgrading from W2000 Pro to XP Pro in my main desktop machine, along
with a major hardware upgrade (M/board, CPU, RAM HDDs etc). Can I still use
my old Partition Magic 6 with XP, or must I also upgrade that?

Just a wild-assed-guess: that version is quite old and probably won't
handle all of today's larger drives. Don't even know if it will
handle NTFS drives.

i usually make polite and
respectful suggestions, but
in this case i must say

"DO NOT USE YOUR VERSION OF PM
ON A SYSTEM HAVING XP SP2"

your version is not compatiable
and will "crash" your disk(s) and
you will cry and cry....why?

i switched to Acronis Disk Director
and never regretted it.

The latest PM is likely to be
compatiable, but I don't think
it is as good as acronis. do
some comparison, but don't
use your pm (period)

Check the Symantec web site; I recall they had info about which worked with
XP.

btw: if i'm not mistaken
XP pro includes
a disk partition utility.

No... forget it...

only the very latest version of PM works with XPSP2

8.1 I believe is the latest

Partition Magic was far superior than acronis...

however Norton BOUGHT it and KILLED it because they had GHOST.

Anyway... I too use acronis now for Vista.. but for XP I still use partition
magic 8.1,
that was the best product of its kind.

Yep, know what you mean about killing PM. I've just perused their website,
and there is barely a mention of PM at all, and certainly not my version, and
"all support has been discontinued". I certainly could not expect much backup
from them, so why would I waste my 60 bucks with them?? I'm going to check
out Acronis....

Do you by any chance use Symantec System Tools as your virus? I ask because
most folks don't know that the newest version of PM (which Symantec
purchased 2-years ago) is on the CD but can only be installed if you go to
the folder and execute it separately.

Just a wild shot.

I keep Partitioning and Imaging Tools up to date because they are worth
their weight in gold.

I agree. Acronis is the way to go (if your ready to update).
Acronis Disk Administrator (resize, split, merge ... everything) and Acronis
True Image (ver 10) are great tools to have.

J

JCO

Acronis True Image 8 will not see SATA drives. You must get version 9 or 10
(latest).
I have ver 10.... works great.

yeh, it is whimpy when compared
to the others.....

Yes, it does, but no ability to resize or move partions

I recommend that folks *not* have a virus on their computers, but
instead use an *anti-virus* program to protect against them. ;-)

Since that sounds like a recommendation for Symantec, I'll throw in a
strong contrary opinion: Norton Anti-Virus (in fact anything Symantec)
is the *worst* of all possible choices.

Just a wild shot.

Imaging tools can certainly be useful for backup purposes, but my view
on partitioning tools is also contrary to yours (and in this case,
contrary to most people's). If your partitioning scheme is planned
properly to meet your needs in the first place, there should almost
never be a need to change it. I've never owned or used a partitioning
tool. because I've never felt a need to change my partition structure.

Latest was 10 when I bought it, about a year ago or more.

You don't have to blast the guy on everything he says. He was responding to
the earlier comments about PM and simply made a point to tell folks that PM
may be hidden on a CD that many other folks may have (regardless of fact
that you don't like Symantec). No where was there a recommendation for
Symantec.

You read to much into that last response. One might read to much into your
response and think you need a few days off from work.

Ghost and PM were not related products or combined by Symantec before or after PM was 'assimilated'. No denial that it was a better product when Power Quest controlled it.

The 'assimilated'/'tweaked' product is still available from Symantec as Partition Magic 8.0 for XP and earlier.

That was also the last version number assigned by Power Quest though PowerQuest provided an update/patch prior to full acquisition by Symantec that modified the version number, iirc to 8.01.
