partition hdd

i have a 60gb hdd that i partitioned using fdisk. i
partitioned it as follows: 5gb (c drive) and the
remaining 52gb (d drive).

for all my applications, i would install it in the d
drive to keep the c drive with available space.
recently, there is a constant message that pops up in the
system tray warning me that i am either low on memory or
out of memory. i viewed my c drive and there's either
2mb or 0mb of available space.

as i said, i install all applications on the d drive,
whenever possible (certain applications doesn't allow me
to install anywhere else besides c drive). however, i
think registry and some files are automatically
installed/saved to the c drive. and i've done all the
windows updates, so it think it took up a lot of my c
drive. i had to delete a lot of applications that were
installed on the d drive to free up space on the c drive.

i was wondering if anyone know what's wrong (how it used
up all of my 5gb on the c drive)? and is there anyway to
shift 5gb from my d drive to my c drive? i still have
20gb+ on my d drive, so it's no prob to shift 5 gb over
to c drive. pls help! thanks!!

With the given information it is hard to tell why exactly
the memory errors are appearing however if you have
recently partitioned the drive I have this advice to
offer.

I would not reccomend the strategy you have chosen.
There is no benefit for you to install Windows on one
partition and program files on the other and in fact this
may only cause confusion and unforseen problems such as
what you have mentioned. If you insist on dividing the
drive you want to give XP plenty of space as the OS will
use up 1 GB by itself, I would install all programs on
the same partition as Windows and only use the second
partition for personal files etc. (I do this so I can
kill my Windows partition without worrying about my
personal data).

You have indeed chosen a rather odd partitioning arrangement. What appears
to be happening now is that your pagefile, or virtual memory (VM), which
needs to be at least as large as your RAM, if not significantly larger, has
run out of space in which to operate (it is on your C: drive). VM is the
overflow area of RAM, so to speak, and without enough of it, things start to
bog down. Your computer is warning you of this eventuality.

I agree with the others. But I personally would not have partitioned the C
drive, I would have went for a single 60gb NTFS partition. Put everything
on it and why worry about dealing with the problems your having.

your message might be a swap file is full. are you using
paging?

your preveous reply is right increase the size. a product
like partition magic can help. also, if you have 52gb. it
means you are using win32 or ntfs. this gives you more
flexibility.

i cant agree. in the short run all in one partition seems
easier. but eventually your operating system will crash.
i like to keep programs and data seperate from the
operating system. in fact, i never put the operating
system on "C".

the only reason why i chose to partitioned my drive into
2 is cause one of my friend who is a senior tech
recommended that partitioning the hdd into two and
keeping the c drive for the o/s and the rest of the
drives for storage.

all in all, what's the best way to free up more space or
give more space to the c drive? thx

what do you mean by "paging?"

i heard that if you use partition magic (pm) to partition
a hdd, it slows down the computer tremendeously. i know
someone who used pm to partition a hdd (c and d drive)
and all/a lot of operations are really slow to execute.
is that true? i don't have pm installed on my comp bc i
used fdisk to partition my hdd. if i installed pm on my
comp to increase the c drive, will it slow down my comp
(if it's true that it slows down the comp if using pm to
do the initial partition.).. yes, i am using fat32 on
all partitions..

Paging refers to your Page or Swap File. You can change it's value by
rt clicking on MyComputer>select
Prop>Advanced>Performance-Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory-Change. Use a
value of 600 for both.
Never heard that PM slowed down the drive after partitioning.

my bro's comp crashed and he installed a new hdd.. on
that new hdd, my friend partitioned his hdd with pm.. he
noticed that it's a lot slower than when he was using the
orig hdd.. and i heard that pm does slow down the
operations/executions from two of my senior technician
friends. that's the reason why i decided to use fdisk to
partition my hdd..
