Partition/format NTFS Fails, FAT32 successful

I'm trying to wipe out a drive and reinstall Windows XP
Pro on a Dell Optiplex GX150. I am able to delete all
partitions after booting from the XP CD, and create a new
partition (9,531 MB). The next step is to format the
partition, and I chose NTFS. The progress bar goes to
100%, then the screen clears and the message "Setup was
unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged."
I can turn around and delete the partition and format
using FAT and the format works fine.
I've run Dell diagnostics on the drive and it finds no
errors.
I just upgraded the BIOS to A10 (the latest) before this
exercise.
Any Ideas????

Perhaps your BIOS upgrade is to blame - I've had cases
like this before! Download & run the disk diagnostic program
that your disk manufacturer makes available on his home
site.

.As I mentioned in the post, I did run Dell's disk
diagnostics and if found no errors.
Any other suggestions?
