XP Pro Cannot Format Partion to NTFS

Hi,

I had a Dell Desktop with ME on it. Last night I wiped the HD completely to
install Windows XP Pro on it. I downloaded the XP Pro Boot utility from the
Microsoft website, because the computer does not have a boot cd drive.

After going through the process of inserting the 6 boot floopys it begins
the setup process from the XP Pro CD.

When it asks the select the partition I want to install XP, I do so, and it
asks me how I want to format the partition. Obviously I want it in NTFS.

When I try formatting the partition in any format it goes through the
process but then tells me that the partition cannot be formatted and setup
cannot continue.

How can I solve this problem?

Try deleting and recreating the partition. If there are more than 1
partitions on the disk exit the setup program after you create the
partition and reboot, that will avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments. When you get to the same screen on the second reboot
format the partition and install Windows.
