Parallel port driver service failed to start

A friends computer (Windows XP Home) with an HP inkjet printer (I'll find
out the model) which has been working fine suddenly stopped being able to
print.

The event log has " Parallel port driver service failed to start " in it

What can cause the parallel port service just to fail - faulty motherboard??
 
I get the same error message and all my hardware seams to work fine. I
suspect it has something to do with service pack 2. Does any one know which
service this is connected with? I have looked for any service dealing with
the Parallel port driver, under, service.msc, found nothing.
