Parallel port issue in XP

L

Lindsay Cripps

Added a 2 port parallel card ( Skymaster) to a dual boot system running 98se
& XP Pro on two hard drives (C & D)
I installed the drivers in 98 after the system picked up the ports (LPT2 &
LPT3) then installed the printer on LPT2. Printed from the printer ok.

I then installed the drivers in XP after the printer picked up the
ports.Once again the ports (LPT2 & LPT3) appeared in device manager as PCI
EPP/ECP parallel Port (LPT2) & PCI EPP/ECP parallel port (LPT3) under ports.
Also PCI 4018 Multi-I/O Adapter under Multifunction adapter. All look good at
this stage.

However when installing the printer neither LPT2 or LPT3 are available under
ports to use. Even installing using plug & play the system identifies the
printer but the installation fails because the port cannot be found.

Can someone offer some advice here please.

Sure. Don't try using newsgroups as your psychic hotline. If you don't
identify your printer then we won't know what it is. It could be
important. ;->

Maybe the software driver for your *unidentified* printer doesn't
support anything but LPT1, or the ports used for LPT2/3 are not what the
driver expects. When you look at the resources used by the controller
in Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), what port number is used for each
controller port? Is 278 used for LPT2 and 27C for LPT3 (LPT1 uses 378
or 3BC)?

Actually the printers are not the issue here but the available LPT ports on
the PC.

Two printers tried a HP 820cxi & an old Epsom LX 800. A driver for each of
these is in XP.

The card installs in device manager ok and shows that its picked up the card
and installed the drivers. Shows up as LPT 2 & LPT 3. (Two port card).

When going to add a printer (any printer) only the original LPT 1 port shows
not the other two.

The same card installs & works fine in 98se. (dual boot system)

Unlike LPT1 there is no resources tab to view in the LPT 2 & 3 properties
with XP. In 98 LPT 2 shows i/o 1000-1007 & 1400-1407. LPT 3 shows i/o
1800-1807 & 1C00-1C07.
