Is it possible to combine numeric and alphabetic heading paragraph numbering
in the same document? If so, how?

I am using a corporate template that the creator had provided only
numeric-numbered headings. Our application requires appendices.

What I want to do is this:

1.0
1.1
1.1.1
etc
2.0
2.1
etc
..
..
..
A.1
A.1.1
A.1.1.1
..
B.1
etc

Well, at it's most basic level, you could just go ahead and alter the first pert of each change
Example
When you are ready to have "A" instead of another number, change the number to a letter by going to Format|Bullets and Numbering. Choose the Outline Tab and Cusotmize the level of the Outline to be alphanumeric instead of Arabic
You may want to do some reading about this--there are easier ways to do this, if you use styles in your documents
Try http://word.mvps.org/_vti_script/Search_SearchSite.htm0.id
Search for Outline Numbering, styles and numbering, etc. to find some articles that will help you out

You'll need to separate outline-numbered lists. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for explicit
instructions on setting up such a list so that it will be virtually
unbreakable.
