how do i number paragraphs

D

Dave W

I am writing a report and I am using heading, sub-heading and paragraph all
of which I want to number, eg:
1. Heading
1.1 Sub heading
1.1.1 Paragraph
1.1.2 Paragraph

1.2 Sub-heading
1.2.1 Paragraph
Etc

I can number the headings but the paragraphs are causing me a major headache.

So now I am formatting the paragraphs as level 3 which means the numbering is
correct, however my new problem is the level 2 sub-heading remains at 1.1 and
will not change to 1.2 or 2.1 etc

Did you associate each of the styles you are using with a unique level of
the outline-numbered list? If so, you should be able to place the
insertionselect the problem paragraph and press Ctrl+Q to clear any direct
paragraph formatting from it.

Corrected version:

Did you associate each of the styles you are using with a unique level of
the outline-numbered list? If so, you should be able to place the insertion
point in the problem paragraph and press Ctrl+Q to clear any direct
paragraph formatting. That should fix the numbering.

Yes, i have done that but i get
1
1.1
1.1.1

2
1.1
2.1.1 etc

the one thing i do notice is that in the Define New Multilevel List dialogue
box, where it says Enter Formatting for Number for all the levels the number
is in a grey box but for level 2 only one number is greyed (where the format
is 1.1) Would that make a difference?

For level 2, delete the contents of the "Enter formatting for number" box
and recreate the contents by adding previous and current level numbers, and
by typing in the period. Then numbering should behave.
