Numbering Paragraphs

G

Guest

I have my styles set up showing:
1. Heading One
1.1 Heading Two
1.1.1 Heading Three

and the normal paragaraph text is also numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.

I want the paragraph numbering to reflect the Header 1 level eg
1. Header 1
1.1 Paragraph
1.2 Paragraph

2. Header 2
2.1 Paragraph
2.2 Paragraph

Is there a default list setting to do this, if not how can I format the
styles so that paragraph text is numbered according to the section it is in?

cheers

Hi

Are you saying that
- a heading will be numbered 1.1
and
- a paragraph of ordinary text will also be numbered 1.1?

If that's the case, then may I suggest that you re-think the process? In my
view, the *only* purpose of numbering paragraphs is to enable people to
refer to them later. Can you imagine the meeting where the boss says "Now,
let's look at 3.4. No, not that 3.4, the other 3.4. Suzie, which 3.4 do you
have? Oh, the bold one. No, that's not the one I mean. Try the other 3.4.
No, it's not earlier than the 3.4 you have, it's later. Oh, this is too
hard. Who created this *&(#*$^ document, any way?"

Let's assume you don't want to do that.

So how do you want Heading 2 and Heading 3 to be numbered?
A header is the text that is shown at the top of the page and repeated on
every page. Do you mean a heading?

Hope this helps.

As Shauna points out, this sort of numbering can be confusing for
readers. However, if you really want it, the easiest way is to use
AUTONUMLGL fields.

For example:

{AUTONUMLGL \e } Heading 1 paragraph
{AUTONUMLGL \e } Body Text paragraph
{AUTONUMLGL \e } Heading 2 paragraph
{AUTONUMLGL \e } Body Text paragraph

would display as follows:

1 Heading 1 paragraph
1.1 Body Text paragraph
1.1 Heading 2 paragraph
1.1.1 Body Text paragraph

To insert the field, you can press Ctrl+F9; Word inserts field
delimiters, { }. Type the code as shown above. Press F9 to display the
result.

Note that you can use copy and paste to duplicate a field.

The AUTONUMLGL field will update automatically (unlike most other
fields).

You can press Alt+F9 to toggle between showing field codes and field
results.
