Numbered headings and paragraphs

Heidi

Help! In Word 2003 it was possible to make headings and paragraphs, that
would be numbered correctly. Like the following:

1. Chapter one

bla bla
1.1 Chapter one, sub paragraph one.

bla bla

1.2 Chapter one, sub paragraph two

2. Chapter two

2.1 Chapter two, sub paragraph one

I can't get it right. I have based header 2 on header 1, but the numbering
keeps going wrong.

What to do? Please make the answer or the referral as detailed as possible,
it is driving me crazy.....

Thanks a lot!
Heidi

You haven't given an example of what, exactly, goes wrong.

General assistance with numbering in Word 2003 can be found in the article
at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

If you are using Word 2007, the quickest way to create "1 Heading 1 1.1
Heading 2 1.1.1 Heading 3" numbering is to click that option under Home tab
| Multilevel List. If, later, you need to edit such a list, place the
insertion point in the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document, and then
click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. Word displays
a dialog box similar to the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog of Word
97-2003.

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for your reply. I'm using Word 2007.
Do I understand you correctly that the headings and paragraphs are made out
of lists instead of headings in this version of Word?

In "modify heading" I noticed that it is not possible to choose for the kind
of heading numbering I wanted.
And if I try to edit it by hand or linkt Heading 2 to Heading 1 it goes
terribly wrong.

Eventually I started typing in the numbers directly (which I hate because
they don't update themselves automatically if you make changes in the
document) and eventually Word seemed to pick up on what I meant and created a
multi level list as you indicated, I believe. But ten still, Word can't get
the numbers right!!!

6. Financial preview:

xyxyxyxyx

6.2 Business proposition

xyxyxyyxyxy

6.2.3 Set up costs

xyxyxyxyxyxy

What happened to 6.1? And to 6.2.1 and 6.2.2?

Please tell me how to fix this? Would you have a template that I can insert
in my favorites to use as a standard?

thanks,
Heidi

Heidi,

What I'm saying is that in Word 2007, you can no longer create or edit
numbered lists in Word via the Modify Style dialog box, which was the
recommended approach in Word 97-2003. But, apart from that change, the
general principles of numbering still apply. For example, you can add
numbering to the built-in headings by choosing such a format at Home tab |
Multilevel List.

To add numbering to other styles, you can click Home tab | Multilevel List |
Define New Multilevel List and then assign styles and numbering formats as
you did in Word 97-2003.
