Paragraph - "Keep with next" unchecks itself...

R

In my H1 heading I check "Keep with next".

But When I close and re-open my document - "Keep with next" is un-checked -
and my headings dont follow the next paragraph....

What's wrong? How do I get it permanent?

Enable "Keep with next" for the *paragraph style* you are using. Also, note
that the built-in headings 1-3 have this setting enabled, by default.

I believe that is exactly what I am doing... but still it is unchecked when I
open the document again (and I know I have saved it).

I am using Word2003 SP3.

Check that in the styles, they are not set to "Automaticaly update" and you
are taking one "Keep with next" off before you save.
If they are not set for "Auto" and you are not deleting a "KWN", then maybe
the file is starting to corrupt.
If so try Open and Repair?
In the File > Open dialog, there is a downward-pointing arrow on the right
end of the Open button. After choosing the file, click that arrow to get a
small menu. Click "Open and Repair" in that menu.
This is for 2003 and prior, maybe different for 2007.
Hope this helps.

Also, if KWN has been removed from the styles in the template on which the
document is based, make sure that "Automatically update styles" isn't
checked in the Tools | Templates and Add-ins dialog (this would cause the
heading styles to be updated to match the template).

That was exactly my problem - I had "Automatically update styles" checked -
so I kept reverting to the old styles. I even noticed, that it didn't happen
