Paint brush (format painter) not working the same - why???

I just got Office 07, and it seems like the paint brush is not working in PPT
07 the same way it did in PPT 03. In PPT 03, I could select a shape (with
text in it), click format painter, then click another shape to bring over ALL
the formatting (line color and width, fill color, font size, paragraph
formatting, etc.). Now, it doesn't seem to bring all of the formatting, just
some of it. Am I doing something wrong? Or has the function changed?

Sometimes I'll get all the color formatting (line, fill, etc.) but none of
the text formatting (font size, line spacing, bullets, hanging indents).
Other times I'll get some but not all of text formatting - font size carries
over but hanging ident and bullet don't.

It seems like to get text formatting, I have to highlight text and then
format paint. In 03, I could get the text formatting by selecting a box (or
other shape) and format painting. Even when I use the text highlight
approach, it seems that hanging indent, bullet, and line spacing do not
consistently work.

I've not noticed any issues. What formatting doesn't "paint"?

The format painter works for me as expected - IF I klick on the border of
the object. If you click in the middle of the object, you sometimes only
copy the text format instead of the shape format. I'm not sure whether this
is due to my new mouse or the new Office. You just have to point precisely.

Best regards,

Like Ute, I think this has to do with what's selected.

Even though you can't see it, text in PPT does have "paragraph markers" at
the end of a bulleted line. (It often shows up as an extra space at the end
of a line when you're selecting text.) If you select this marker when
painting text formatting (actually, I mean when you're picking up the
formatting to paint), it will pick up the hanging indent and bullet. But if
you don't have that selected, you only get the font size and color. You also
have to make sure to select that paragraph marker when you paint the
formatting onto text. Otherwise, even if you've picked up the bullet and
hanging indent (the paragraph settings/formatting, in other words), you'll
only paint the text formatting onto the text.

Does that make sense? Basically, you can select (and paint to) some text, a
"paragraph", or the entire object. If it's just text, you get font color and
size formatting. If it's "paragraph," you get those settings -- horizontal
alignment, line spacing, bullets, hanging indent, etc. If it's the object,
you get everything.

Here's a tip, too: If you double-click in the text, you'll select all the
text in a line. If you triple-click (it's actually more like a double-click
then another quick single click), you'll get all the text in the line plus
the "paragraph marker."

If you select the *object,* you should get all the formatting. Click inside
it, then hit Esc to select the object itself. Does that do the trick?

You know, I do see some odd stuff happening here, though. Sometimes the
bullets get picked up, and other times they don't. It does have to do with
what I've selected and picked up and what exactly I'm applying it to, but I
can't quite figure out the rules.

You might want to give the eyedropper tools a try. All that stuff I typed
out above works as expected with them! Go to Office Button | PPT Options |
Customize and then choose "from all commands" up in the top instead of
"popular commands." Find Pick Up Style and Apply Style and add those to your
Quick Access Toolbar.

These work like Format Painter on steriods. You pick up the style using the
one dropper, and you apply it using the other. The style selection stays
until you choose another. So these aren't as ephemeral as Format Painter.
But again, what is picked up depends on what's selected -- some text, a
"paragraph" of text, or the entire object.
