Paging File, in Virtual Memory

Hi,

System Win XP Home Edition Sp1, 768MB Memory, AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Processor.

From time to time, I get a warning dialog in the system tray that my virtual
memory is too low and Widows has adjusted it.
I looked in system properties, advanced, performance, settings, advance,
change, Virtual Memory, and it is set as:

Drive Volume:
C: 1151 - 2881MB
Custom Size 1151 - 2881MB
Minimum Allowed 2MB
Recommended 1150MB
Currently Allocated 1151MB

System set to Custom Size.

Please can anyone tell me if this custom size is too low and needs to be
raised, or would it be better to click on System Managed Size?

At the time I received the warning I was using Internet Explorer with
Outlook running in the background.

Hi Stephen,

Nothing wrong with that size. What you may be encountering is a pagefile
corruption. Simply disable the pagefile, reboot, then reenable it (and
reboot again). This will cause a new file to be built and may resolve the
problem.

Personally, I'd reduce the starting size to around 100MB unless you know how
to read the .dmp files created in a system crash. The reason your minimum
size is so large is that it is set to catch memory dumps on system failure
(which requires that the minimum size be at least as large as the physical
ram). If you can't read the dumps, why have it? With 768MB of ram, you will
probably be using little, if any, of the virtual memory unless you are doing
some really hefty graphics work.

I've lowered the file to 150MB and followed your instructions as if there
were any corruptions. So far so good!!
